Cinderella ~ NOT so Happily Ever After

Welcome to the "WHAT IF?" Fairy Tale Madness Blogfest!

I'll be giving a paperback copy of "Save the Cat" by Blake Snyder to the winner of the "Tragedy" group. But I plan on hopping around to all your blogs through the week and admiring your entries! Can't wait to see what you have.

In the mean time... I thought I would break the bad news to you.

Cinderella is NOT a true story. At least, the way you've heard it, isn't.

There was no fairy godmother, because... lets face it - there is no such thing. There was however, a very beautiful set of glass slippers that Cinderella waltzed in all night long. She DID have to leave at midnight in order to beat her wicked stepmother and stepsisters home and she DID lose a shoe on the steps, twisting her ankle in the process!

The carriage with her stepmother pulled in just as Cinderella reached the door, but it was too late. Her stepsisters were so furious that she was the one dancing with the prince all night, they tore her dress to shreds and shattered her precious shoe, leaving her nothing but memories.

When the Duke came looking for the girl to fit the slipper that was lost at the palace, nobody had to lock Cinderella away. Her foot was so swollen and bruised from twisting her ankle that the shoe couldn't possibly fit - and it didn't, leaving Cinderella in tears with a broken heart and shattered dreams.

When the prince couldn't find the girl to fit the slipper, his father forced him to wed a princess from a neighboring kingdom. The union avoided a huge war, but the prince was bitter and unhappy - turning him into one of the cruelest and most feared kings in history.

So you see... there is no such thing as Happily Ever After.

*sniff, sniff*

Okay... please check out the other amazing people participating in the blogfest! You can add your name to the linky and post your entry any time this week! Have fun hopping!

Hey :)

That was awesome!!! LOVED why the shoe didn't fit... I was laughing when the prince turned out to be a mean old king fart :)

Magic writing :)

Hmmm, I'd never thought about her twisting her ankle - of course! *smacks head* Great twist ;)

Aww, poor Cinderella! :( Lovely twist!

Why do I have this feeling that Cinderella will be a popular choice for this blogfest?
The differences should be fascinating.

Ohhhhh, this is a tale full of wooooeeee. But I like it ;) Guess I'm nasty that way. hehe

Ha! Twisted ankle definitely sounds more probable. I went the way of the tragedy as well. Enjoy!

That was an unhappy ending!

Oh no! Poor Cinderella. :(

Tasha Seegmiller said...

Never underestimate the way an injured ankle can impact your life!

Oh boy, that turned out badly for everybody. I did a Cinderella story too, plot twist though. It'd be fun to see some stats on which fairy tales the most stories were based off of.

Carrie-Anne said...

Wow, that's one dark plot twist!

Connie B. Dowell said...

The swollen ankle was a nice (dare I say it?) twist. :)

Leigh! The story is forever RUINED for me!!!! You horrible, horrible person! *wink*

That was too awful. You twisted mind, you! ;)

OH my. The prince was into foot fetishes anyway. Such an obsession over feet and shoes can't be healthy for a long term relationship.

Rena said...

Oh man, that was sad. Poor prince, poor Cinderella.

I has a sad now. :(

Hah! The sniff-sniff was a funny touch to a terrible tragedy. An enjoyable read-- nicely done.

This is a great, unhappy ending to Cinderella's story. This is the way real life can go sometimes.

So sad :'( But I know you just made it up and it's not real or I'd be crying for real (not just 'for emoticon')

I'm glad you filled in on the true story. I always wondered...obviously mine can't be true then...

Rose Munevar said...

Poor Cinderella! She seems to be a popular choice for a story re-do. I went with her too :)

Rek said...

Poor Cindrella...too bad she didn't have photographs for proof.
Great but sadly realistic entry.

Madeleine Maddocks said...

Tragic indeed. That Duke should have waited for poor Cinderella's foot to heal. I bet he was in league with the stepmother!

Cathy Keaton said...

Oh, how sad! This is win for Team Tragedy, though. A lot of things could have gone wrong with that glass slipper being used to find Cinderella. Not such a perfect way to go about it.

SC Author said...

I'm so horrible... is it bad that I find tragedy a bit funny? But this was sad, no doubt, especially when she breaks the slipper.

Medeia Sharif said...

That is tragic. Great retelling, Leigh.

Clare said...

Oh, how sad. Poor Cinderella and the Prince. Beautifully written.
