Must Have!

If you haven't managed to get your hands on this... you MUST do it! I won this as part of the June prizes on Inkpageant, but if I'd known about it sooner, I would have bought it myself.

I know that sometimes in my writing I tend to "overuse" certain habits or characteristics to show certain emotions. This book can cure of that! I just flip it open, and find the emotion you're looking for them pick whatever action you want to use! DONE!

It's super easy to use!
Find it on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

Next is my book suggestion: ENCLAVE!

I read this book SO FAST because it's impossible to put down! Imagine a totally cool dystopian world with some freaky creatures that you'd find in a cool fantasy novel. This book has both! Sa-Weet!

The next book, OUTPOST is due out on September 4th, and yes - that is WAY too long for me to wait!

So... what have you been reading? Any good book suggestions?
And have you read either of these? What are your thoughts about them?

I'm sure you haven't missed it, but just in case you did... CASSIE MAE has an agent!

And, if you haven't heard...

Falling for Fiction & How Not to Get Sued for Having Pictures on Your Blog

First off...
Cassie Mae contacted me about being on Falling for Fiction today!
I'm SO excited and just a little bit nervous... but you should hop over and check it out!

Are you back?
Okay good!

Now... if you haven't read this article, you need to do it NOW! Did you know that you can get sued for all the awesome pictures that you use on your blog? And that most of the rules that you think keep you safe, really don't? Ugh. It's aggravating and scary, but Roni Loren tells you the rules from experience! Be sure to check it out. Although I hate that this is how it works, I'm so glad that Roni shared this information with the rest of us.

Have you already removed pictures from you blog because of this? How far back did you go to remove them? You'll notice I no longer have "eye candy" in the side bar. *weeps* And I'm trying to remove any others I may not be able to have too. Grrr. My posts look so bare without them. I love pictures in blog posts! It makes it so much more fun!

Hangers... Oh My!

Today is the 2nd day of the Hookers and Hangers Blogfest, hosting by the freaking wonderful ladies at Falling For Fiction!

Can I quickly say, how fun it was to read everyone's hookers on Monday? I loved it! I can't wait to see what everyone shares for their "hangers" today!

Here are a few of mine:

I took off in the other direction and ran, Logan close behind me.

The shouts of the soldiers on the ship rang through the air as Logan and I tried to close the gap between us and the cliffs.

When I opened my eyes, a sea of bearded strangers stared down at me.

All I cared to do was get clothes on my body and food in my stomach so I could go after Logan.

We all nodded our understanding and followed Cerron away from the safety of the cave.

Now... if you didn't get the chance to enter for a $10 Amazon gift card, be sure to hop over to Monday's post and enter to win! I'll announce the winner Friday.

And thanks again to Falling for Fiction for hosting this blog hop! It's been a blast!

Hookers... and a Giveaway!

No - I'm not giving away a Hooker! Sorry! But... I am participating in the Hookers & Hangers Blogfest hosted by the lovely ladies at Falling for Fiction!

This has been so much fun and has really helped me give my first lines a little more flare!

So... today we are posting our "hookers!" Or... the first sentence to our chapters (however many you choose.)

Here are a few of mine...

Fat Boys fist sailed past my face, barely missing my cheek.

No matter how hard I swam, it felt like slow motion.

I should have been happy to be alive, but having a broken wrist and lying naked in front of a bunch of men made me wish I would have died.

My eyes couldn't help but drift to the water in search of the mysterious sea monster.

Images of Logan haunted my dreams.

The clothes they gave me were too big and made for a boy, but I didn't care.

Thanks for all the fun ladies! This was very helpful AND fun!

I feel like I need to celebrate because my Facebook page reached 100 Followers! Whoo-hoo!
So, I have a $10 Amazon giftcard for one of my lucky followers!
Just use the widget below and I'll announce the winner on Friday!
Open internationally!

Importance of the Antagonist...

It seems to me that we spend most of our time considering the hero.
  • Journey
  • Growth
  • Goals
  • Conflict
  • Etc.
 But what about the ANTAGONIST?

"A hero is only as strong as the antagonist."
~ Janette Rallison

I don't know about you, but I think that's true. The villain tests the heroes abilities and worthiness. Overcoming the villain is usually the main goal of the story. If that task isn't a HUGE challenge... if the antagonist isn't a scary S.O.B, then our heroes status doesn't grow or show like we want AND need it too.

That being said, the villain/shadow/antagonist doesn't necessarily have to be a person. It depends on your book or your genre, but the person/object/event that the hero fights against needs to be great enough to show the true strength of your character as they fight to overcome it.
One thing I think is important to remember is that the villain needs a story too. (This mostly relates to a "person" villain.) But they need to have goals, and motivation too. Give them a little back story so we know their motives and why they are so evil, or why they create such a conflict with the hero.

What do you think? Do you think the antagonist needs this kind of attention in a story? Do you like to use a person, object or event as the main conflict of your story?

Myths, Legends & the Bear Lake Monster!

  1. A traditional story, esp. one concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically.

A traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but unauthenticated.
Don't you love myths & legends? I do! I think they can be particularly fun when writing fantasy although they could make for some fun scenes in other genres too, including contemporary.

I spent the past weekend with my family in Bear Lake. This is a lake/town on the Utah/Idaho border. It is absolutely beautiful and one of my favorite places to visit. However, they have a legend or myth about the "Bear Lake Monster." (Interesting article here.)
For those of you who have been around for a while, you know that I have a slight (okay, maybe more than slight) fear of the water. This fear mostly has to do with the ocean, because I can't help but wonder what's beneath me waiting to eat me. In the case of the Bear Lake Monster, it might just pull me under and drown me first, BUT STILL!

You will be proud to know that I made it the whole trip without ever freaking out about this monster or worrying about whether or not it was going to surface and whip me off the wave runner and keep me for dinner. Until I fell in. *sigh*

I guess I'm just more comfortable with my feet on the ground. I swam to the sea doo faster than you can blink and tried to get on as fast as possible without causing a huge scene or letting my husband see how serious my phobia is. (I would never live it down.)

However, it provided me with a fun topic for today's post so I am thankful for that. My current work is a YA fantasy and I have taken certain myths and legends and brought them to life within it. I LOVE IT! It is so much fun to make these things real... and who knows... maybe they are *bites nails* As long as I don't have to encounter any of them in outside of my book, I am totally cool with them existing.

So how 'bout you? Do you have a myth or legend that you're particularly fond of? Have you ever used one in your book, somehow?

Proud to Be an American!

Most of you probably know that America celebrates Independence Day on July 4th. So in honor of this country that I feel so blessed to live in...

A special THANKS to the men and women (and their families) who serve our country and fight for freedom. May we never take it for granted.

Why Tragedy?

For those of you who haven't heard... the FAIRY TALE MADNESS BLOGFEST is coming up the week of August 13th - 17th!

You can click HERE for details or to sign up!

You'll notice, that I  am TEAM TRAGEDY! Yes, I actually chose this category, but now I'm wondering WHY?

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for this category - and the Team Tragedy button ROCKS (thank you Cassie Mae) but... I hate tragedies! Yes, I said... HATE!

Could I be any more clear? I guess that is part of why I thought this category would be so fun. Plus, it's pretty upside-down for a fairytale to be a tragedy. Right? Fairytales have HAPPY endings! Well, not for Team Tragedy! I seriously can't wait to see what you guys come up with!

The hard part is to come up with something of my own! Guess I better get to work!

Have you decided what team you're on? Please tell if you have!

And... if you haven't had the chance to sign up yet - here's the linky! Thanks to all of you who have helped spread the word! You're awesome & we appreciate it!
