"J" is for JAWS!

I believe that JAWS is the reason for my fear of water. Okay, not all water, mostly the ocean, but I kind of freak out in lakes too! Pathetic, right?

The ocean is the worst for me because something really COULD be in there waiting to EAT me! I try not to be such a sissy, but if you read yesterdays post on imagination you'll understand that my imagination can run away with me. What's terrible is that I'm an adult and it still happens. *sigh*

Lakes get to me a little bit. I love to water ski and stuff, but in my head I'm secretly wondering if something is going to grab onto my leg and pull me under. This could be a rogue shark or even an octopus. AND... to make myself look even worse... there is a lake on the Utah/Idaho border called Bear Lake. It has the legendary story of the "Bear Lake Monster," which is probably something like the Loch Ness Monster. Well, while out on the wave runners, I try not to look at the water below me, afraid of that darn monster coming up to get me!

*Hides behind computer* Don't tell okay? I'm way too old for this kind of thing, but it still freaks me out!
I had to post the picture last because it's freaking me out!

Lake Placid did for lakes what Jaws did for the ocean, so you probably shouldn't watch that movie if you haven't already!

I know what you mean, though I couldn't help pointing out your typo - "rouge shark". I'm picturing a nice feminine, lady shark with a bit of blusher. Takes the menace out of it a bit! Sorry, couldn't help laughing. :) BTW, the Loch Ness monster is generally seen as benign, so I don't think you should worry while waterskiing!

You're never too old to be afraid of the water. I grew up by the ocean and I love to swim in it, but I definitely do it with deliberate blinders on. Sometimes if I will it, I can pretend I'm not scared of what lurks beneath (for me it's particularly jellyfish).

Last thing anyone ever sees is that image!
Agree with Nick. And you probably don't want to know that some sharks can swim upriver rather far.

I loved Jaws. Didn't scare me away from the ocean, but then again I only get to the ocean once every 5-8 years. I think I'm more nervous about jelly fish--not that I've seen them either up close and personal.

Jaws 3D was the first 3D movie I ever saw. Pathetic by today's standards, but pretty cool for back then.

I'm pretty afraid of the sea and lakes too - but I can't swim, so I guess it makes sense lol!

I have enough unsettling stuff in my life without having to face sharks. And what do you show me?

Today is turning into "one of those days."

I'm not a water person. I love the ocean, but I won't swim in lakes or rivers, not because I'm afraid of what's in there but because I'm grossed out by it.. I don't want any cute little fish or weird plant TOUCHING me... ugh!

Love the movie! Recently saw it with the family. I never tire of it!

That picture is freaky!! haha. I feel the same way about the ocean. If I touch anything with my feet while I'm walking in I jump with super human strength. Thanks for sharing Leigh :0)

I haven't heard of the Bear Lake Monster. Probably because he's so stealthy.

I have the greatest fears of microscopic things...therefore anxiety rises at the public pool quicker than the ocean. Salt water kills microorganisms, right?

Huge, HUGE fear for me. I won't go in the ocean because of that stupid movie. Freaks me out!

Tasha Seegmiller said...

I haven't seen the movie (!) but I live in the middle of the desert, so I'm not horribly frightened by the prospect of sharks. However, I will NEVER be one of the people who agree to be locked in a cage with sharks trying to get in to eat me. WTH!!!

I love to walk on the beach but I'm not much of a beach swimmer. I look out over the huge expanse of water and wonder, hmm, what's really under there... Yikes!

Ew. I hate Jaws... I've NEVER liked it! Bleh!

LOL.

And Bear Lake! Gah. I've seen the Bear Monster myself!

Jaws terrifies me. I can only imagine what it would be like if Spielberg or someone of similar talent were to remake it and then C.G.I. the shark. It would be horrific and send crowds screaming from the water.

I think you infiltrated my blog and saw what I've got posted for the letter S. Sharks scare the crap out of me!!!!

I am so with you! When I was a kid we went to the beach for a week every summer. I wasn't nearly brave enough to go into the deeper water for fear of sharks. I'd look down and see shadows and go running for the beach. I've been able to handle lakes, but that's probably because I'm trying really hard not to think about what's underneath. *shudder* Darn that murky water.

I'm scared of water, too, Leigh! Sheesh, we should be friends or something, lol! ;)

I have actually never seen Jaws. Though sharks are super freaking scary. I think my fear of water comes from when I was swimming in the ocean as a kid (used to live in San Diego) and I got caught under my boogie board. Not cool!

I have a slight obsession with sharks, so they don't scare me much. But the music to Jaws always gets my heart pounding. :)

And they're finally releasing JAWS on BluRay this year. WOOHOO!!

Angela Cothran said...

I watched this with my boys. Didn't scare them AT ALL. Bunch of desensitized weirdos!

It took me a while to get over that secret lake fear, too. ;) When I was younger, I had extra motivation to hang on tight whenever I went tubing...if I didn't fall off, I wouldn't end up in the water with all the creepy fish.

Donna K. Weaver said...

Oh, I remember watching Jaws in the theater when it was first released. My roomie (who didn't read scary books) and I had to support each other to make it back to her car. =D I'd never screamed in a movie before, but I did for that one. I'd have been embarrassed except that no one could hear me since everyone else was screaming. lol

David P. King said...

I love that movie. And you haven't lived until you've seen the JAWS attraction on the Universal Studios tour (be sure to sit on the right side of the tram - you'll never want to go into a body of water again) ;)

Charlie Holmberg said...

Oh, I know! Lakes = leeches, coast = jellyfish, and ocean = sharks. Shark week did not help, either! Totally feel for you, here ;)

The Golden Eagle said...

I've never seen Jaws. You're not the first person to say they're afraid of water because of watching it, though, so I'm a little wary of the movie . . . LOL.

I saw this movie when I was so little I was afraid to go in the bathtub for weeks! TRUE! :-)

I'm the say exact way! I tried snorkeling once and was nearly hyperventilating the entire time cause it's impossible to relax knowing there's things swimming underneath you! Crazy! And I know the sharks aren't far behind, probably laughing at me from behind a piece of coral or something :)

Fairview said...

great post. Yeah, I only swam in pools not the sea for like 5 years after that.

Kelly Hashway said...

I'm with you. I'm terrified of sharks. I do go in the water though. In fact the last time I was swimming where there are sharks was in the Bahamas. We were snorkeling and the guy in charge warned us not to go by the sea grass because that's where the sharks hang out. Guess where my husband (fiance at the time) ended up when his snorkel mask wouldn't stay on? Yup! Luckily, we didn't see any and we swam back to the boat.

I love swimming! I was the two year old who was trying her hand at underwater diving (freaked my mother out too). We went camping a lot and I always wanted to swim in nearest body of water. I guess I'm a freak in that respect, lol!

Mark Koopmans said...

Hey :)

Don't read SOUL SURFER then... you'll never swim again :)

(Actually, you *should* read the book... it's really very good :)

PS... THANKS for leaving Liam a Happy Birthday... that was *very* cute :)

Jemi Fraser said...

You're not alone! Going into the lakes after seeing this movie was so tough! We all screamed whenever a bit of seaweed touched us! And I'll never lie on a surfboard! :)

Kelley Lynn said...

Great movie. I'm not afraid of the ocean because of sharks. I'm afraid of jellyfish. My mom got stung by one last summer and it turns out she's deathly allergic.

And I don't want to get stung to find out if its genetic...

Lara Schiffbauer said...

I'm with you on lakes. There is something about dark, murky water that is inherently scary. I did okay with the one time I swam in the ocean, though. I think because the water was clear.

Samantha said...

My house in Florida is 3 miles from the beach but I'll be d*&%ed if I get in that water :D

Cindy Keen Reynders said...

In Wyoming, we don't have much water to worry about. But places I've been I wind up going "out there." I'm like Lara. I feel better when the water's clear.

Betty Alark said...

Haha! Funny one,Leigh!

Your not alone in those types of imaginings; I have the same fears. As far as oceans go - I think your fears are warranted.

I would never want to be stranded in the ocean struggling to get to land; I'm sure my fear would be shark bate and they would all come to feed;lol.

I'm still laughing- good one!

Coleen Patrick said...

Leigh I am the same way! My mom took me to see Jaws when I was six--she swears she didn't know what it was about and we kept walking out to the lobby when it got intense!
But I have mini panic attacks even in lakes. I have been known to ask if there are any feeder waterways from the ocean because bull sharks have been known to make it all the way to fresh water. lol.
