Un-Slumping Yourself...

Happy Monday friends! In all honesty I'm not sure how much I will be able to post this week. Life has pushed itself into full gear and I have my hands full. But I love you and I'll be back next week for sure! I will post more this week if time allows. I hope it does.

I did want to update you on my WIP. My goal was to finish said MS by the 31st. And guess what? I'm stuck! Just my luck. But  I haven't failed. It is almost done. Just a few words left. The one final action and climax for the end. I just can't decide what it should be! Aggghh! But, I'm going to call it good. Here's my plan:
  • Call it good for a bit. Let my mind have a break from the book.
  • Then take a look at a detailed chapter by chapter outline.
  • Make a few changes to the story and plot line that I already know I want to do.
  • Write the darn ending!
  • Then out for critiques!
I'm good with this. And... as I realized the slump I was in, these famous - and oh-so-perfect - words came to mind. (Thank you Dr. Seuss for being such an inspirational writer!)

I'm sorry to say so
but, sadly, it's true
that Bang-ups
and Hang-ups
can happen to you.

You can get all hung up

in a prickle-ly perch.
And your gang will fly on.
You'll be left in a Lurch.

You'll come down from the Lurch

with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then,
that you'll be in a Slump.

And when you're in a Slump,

you're not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself
is not easily done.

That's not for you!

Somehow you'll escape
all that waiting and staying
You'll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

With banner flip-flapping,

once more you'll ride high!
Ready for anything under the sky.
Ready because you're that kind of a guy!

Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done!

There are points to be scored. There are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You'll be as famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
You're off the Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!

(Words taken from Dr. Seuss's book, Oh, The Places You'll Go! Not the entire book or in full order.)

So friends! I know you can move that mountain you're working on. I know it. It takes hard work and perseverance, but you can do it! And so can I. We all can! So I hope you will pick up Dr. Seuss's book & read it whenever you need a pick me up! Have a great week!

*Good Luck* this week, and after conbobulating with a few peeps, this is what I came up with re. finishing WIP....

Morgan would probably say:

"You. Can. Do. It."

Cassie would definitely say:

"You can Dew it."

DPK might say:

"I'm David, and you can do it."

SIGGY may say next year:

"Now that you've done it, can I have one of those signed book thingies."

Leigh, thanks for the inspiration. And don't put so much pressure on yourself. The end of that story will reveal itself to you. And when it does, you will sprint to the finish line.

Have a good Monday!

You will do it! A break is always a great way to freshen the brain cells.

Love Seuss :) I think its a good idea to let it sit. If you need someone to bounce ideas off let me know.

I always take a break when I'm stuck, the right words come when you least expect them. Good luck.

Oh I hate being stuck. You have my sympathies. Best to rest up for A to Z anyway!

I quote this to my son when he's had something happen. Dr. Suess really was a genius.

You are doing exactly what I've had to do with my MS. I really does help to step back a bit and let it rest.

Good Luck!!

I think taking a step back from the ending, as you have done, is an excellent idea. Self-imposed deadlines are great motivators, but we have to be able to adjust them if necessary.

Cassie Mae said...

Smart man that Dr. Suess. :)

Good luck and yay for a brain break! I get one this week too!

And you know what you need:

Thanks, Leigh! I needed this right now, I'm definitely working on a mountain, lol! I think it definitely pays to step back and take a break, give your mind a breather. Good luck to you!! :)

You. Can. Do. It. !!!!!!

Leigh, it's funny how our lives are mirrored, but just a couple weeks off. I *so* was here a few days ago. And you WILL get through it.... that inspiration will strike and then your fingers will be flying. I hate these frustrating moments... But so worth it on the flip side when you have a finished product that you're proud of!

I like your plan. Step away, clear your head, and you'll be pleasantly surprised VERY soon.

You should've seen me when I saw you has a new post up---I always jump to click cuz you're always too much fun ;)

This edit is kicking my butt. Plus, because I'm fleshing things out from the first draft, the end is a moving target. =D

Inspirational, Leigh! I needed this today.

And congrats on winning the head shots. :)

COngrats on winning Erin's contest. That should be fun.
I hear ya on the slumpy thing. I posted about a very similar thing today. But I just busted out of my slump and rockin' and rollin'. It happens!

I love Dr. Seuss! A little rest never hurt anyone, so I hope things settle for you soon, and you get a recharge. :)

My husband's parents gave him this book for graduation. I don't think he quite understand the significance at the time, but it makes me want to cry thinking I'll do the same as his mom did and give it to my children when they're ready to move mountains :)

I love it, Leigh! I keep Oh, the Places You'll Go! on the bookshelf behind my desk. I've always liked this part:

"Except when they don't.
Because, sometimes, they won't.

I'm afraid that some times
you'll play lonely games too.
Games you can't win
'cause you'll play against you."

Samantha said...

Good luck Leigh. You're too awesome to let anything bring you down. Relax and let your mind unwind a bit. When you come back we'll still be here :)

I hear ya on the the life in full gear thing. And being stuck! Thanks for your pick-me-up. I need it! :)

We eagerly await your return. :)

Life seems to be rearing its ugly head all over the place. I hope all is well for you.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right. If you need the time to make your book the best you can then that is the best option for you.

Good luck with it all.

I have been in slump city trying tp prevent reality from attempting world domination. Luckily, I thwarted their plans, and slump city is about to be bulldozed...

Kelley said...

Girl! You know exactly what to say. At first I was worried I wouldn't be getting those last chapters anytime soon!! Leaving me hangin'. Tisk tisk :) haha

I'm so pumped to read it and you're doing the right thing. Take a wee break, organize your thoughts and go back at it. Can't wait!

Peggy Eddleman said...

You. Are. Awesome, Leigh! I love you. You'll totally get unstuck, because you're you! And that's what you do!

Angela Brown said...

How totally Seussical and inspiring. Even in the midst of your own bit of a slump, you bumpty, bump, bump with words to excite, words that help the imagination take flight.

Thank you so much and I can't wait to find out how your headshots session goes. You're going to make the camera blush with your beautiful smile.

Kyra Lennon said...

Excellent inspiration!

Taking a little time away from the book will help a lot!

We've all been there. Thanks for sharing your inspiration - and here's hoping you come back to the project with a great new energy.

Thanks for the pick-me-up from Dr. Seuss! And good luck with the crazyness of life this week, and with figuring out your book. It's always frustrating to get stuck, especially when you're on a deadline and have a million things going on. You can do it!

The ending is always challenging. I did mine several times.

I rewrote my ending several times. Sigh. All the best.

We CAN do this! YOU CAN FIGURE OUT THAT ENDING! But sometimes it's good to step away for a bit. Good for you!

Good luck, sister!

When I get stuck, I have to step away from my work for awhile, too. There's nothing wrong with it, sometimes living life will inspire the ending :)

Hope you get unstuck soon!

And also with Marko, we MISS YOUR PRESENCE. I've totally noticed! LOL.
