Jessica Therrien ~ Oppression

Today is the day! It's my turn to host Jessica Therrien for part of her book launch for OPPRESSION! *cheers!* I have been so excited for this book and this launch. So I'm here to share a little interview with Jessica AND... I'm giving away 2 E-BOOKS of OPPRESSION! Whoot-whoot!

First off... meet Jessica! She's gorgeous and talented! What a combo! And... judging by the answers in her interview, she's totally awesome. So lets get right to it!

Hi Jessica! I'm sure everyone is dying to get their hands on OPPRESSION, so how about we learn a little more about how it came about.
Aside from magical blood, and aging slowly, is Elyse anything like you? (Or do you have a secret too?) Tell us about your similarities and differences. (BTW, I LOVE her name!)
Elyse is like me in a lot of ways. It was hard not to let parts of myself bleed into my main characters.  Elyse and I are both a little shy—the stay-at-home type. She’s braver than me, though. Stronger, too. I’m a bit of a pushover, but we both love with our whole hearts, and we both cry too much.

Tell us a little about your favorite character (besides Elyse). Just a quick teaser. We don't want you to give away too much!
The obvious choice is William, and though I love William very much, the character that likes to haunt me the most is Kara. She sort of took on a life of her own and snuck her way into the novel. I never intended her to be a main characterapparently she had her own plans.

Is this a standalone book or can we expect a sequel?
Absolutely expect a sequel! Children of the Gods—Book Two has no official title yet, but it is almost done and will be out sometime next year. I can’t wait to get it out into the world as well. I love it just as much as the first one.

And for all the aspiring writers out there... how long did this book take you to write? How long do you spend writing, editing, etc? Are you the type of writer who can pump it out in a month or two... or did it take longer?
It took a LOT longer than a month or two, HAHA! I feel like I keep giving different answers for this. Sometimes I say 2 years, sometimes 1the truth is, I wasn’t really keeping track. I also gave up so many times and didn’t write for months, so it’s hard to know exactly. Let’s just saya while. The editing was a whole different monster. It took almost as long as writing the book. Okay, maybe it just seemed like it took that long
I’ve had to write this second book much faster, given deadlines and all, but it has been a lot easier. I feel comfortable with who the characters are. I know where I want the story to go (though sometimes not exactly how I’m going to get there). I also learned a lot about how I write with the first book.

How about a little bit about yourself? Tell us three things about you that we probably don't know.
1.         Every room in my house is cleanexcept for my closet. It’s a disaster. Clothes are everywhere
2.       Before I go to bed every night I have to have a bowl of cereal.
3.       I’m shy when I first meet people, so sometimes they think I’m rude. Underneath, I’m a giant goofball who just needs to get to know you.

If you were a super hero, what would your super power be? Would you go with the magical healing blood, or something else?
I’m going to opt out of the magical healing blood. It’s not as awesome as you might think. I’m sticking with the power of flight.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 things would you want with you, (besides you laptop and family)?
1.         My Droid phone (with the kindle app., Facebook, and music installed)
2.   Every season of vampire diaries and a T.V. (we can assume this desert island has a power outlet, right? Haha)
3.       A really warm blanket (I get cold a lot. It’s torture.)

What advice do you have for other aspiring authors?
My answer is always the same for this one, because I truly believe it is the best advice I can give. Go to a writers’ conference. It’s how I got discovered. You’ll meet great people and learn a lot no matter what.

See!!! I told you guys she was awesome! Jessica - thanks so much for letting me be a part of your book launch!

Great interview. As much as I'd like the power of flight, I hurt myself way too often, so I'd probably have to go with the magical healing blood. Wouldn't that make you immortal? If the blood is constantly healing everything it comes into contact with, you'd never be sick, broken bones would heal quickly, and you'd never age because your blood would keep things from "going bad." Might want to rethink that one... :o)

I agree the editing takes longer, especially once you hit that second book.

LOL @ Elizabeth! It wouldn't work for me either. :(

Jessica sounds great, as does Oppression!

Leigh, thanks for a great interview, and thanks everyone for your comments!

I love reading all of Jessica's interviews.. she's totally down to earth. I would have to agree with Vampire Diaries and a TV on a deserted island.. although if I had to choose, I think I'd take my Nook instead!

I bought this book last week, based solely on Leigh's ranting and raving. I'm so excited to start it.

Contest won't work for me either...hmm. Great interview. I love the cover of Oppression! I completely agree with Jessica's answer about conferences, I highly recommend them too. It's where I've met my awesome CP's, and that in and of itself was totally worth it!!!

Congratulations Jessica! I'm really looking forward to reading Oppression! And I eat a bowl of cereal almost every night (so do my kids) too! I go into a panic if we only have one or two boxes in the pantry :)
Thanks for another great interview Leigh :)

Great interview, Leigh and Jessica. I'm always happy to learn about a great book I hadn't heard of yet. This one sounds exciting.

Jessica,
People often think I'm rude too, 'cause I'm so quiet. We shy people are so misunderstood ;)

A bowl of cereal before bed is a must, I agree!

Thanks!

Great interview! Thanks, Jessica, for sharing that it actually took some time to write and complete your first novel, but the second was faster. It gives me hope that any subsequent novels after the first won't be such a process! I can hope, can't I?

Great interview. This is the second I've read, and each is so different. Leight, a lot of fun. Will have to get this book.
