I'm an Exclamation Point Whore!

Hey! This isn't supposed to come up until morning! Drat!
Oh-well... my Thursday post is officially open early!

You may have noticed that I'm a bit of an exclamation point whore! (See, there it is!) Ah! I can't quit!

Okay, enough. Let me explain before you judge me too much. I use them a LOT in my blog posts and even more in my comments. Yes - you'll see them everywhere I comment.

Reason #1 - I actually speak like that. For the most part. I'm overly dramatic and very animated. I cannot talk without using my hands. Yeah - I'm that person. Here's an example.

I was talking to a couple friends at church. Afterward, my mom asked me (yes, we're in the same ward,) what we were talking about. I told her. (FYI - it was a horrible story about a lady pretending to run over the girls toddler to teach her a lesson to hold her children's hands in the parking lot. Hard to do with 3 kids.) Anyway...after I relayed the story, I asked her, "Why?"

"Because of the look on your face!" She continued to show me a series of ridiculous facial expressions that probably weren't all that exaggerated from what I was doing. The other girls face was pretty much still. She looked concerned, but she wasn't a weirdo --- like me!

Moral --- almost everything I say and do is done with an exclamation point. I'm always excited. So yeah - I use the little buggers when I write because they help express how it's coming out of my mouth!

Reason #2 - Writing can be hard. Do you ever listen to someone rant on their blog and think, Man, what a Beast! Then at the end, they laugh it off - they've been laughing through the whole post, but you think they're pulling their hair out. Ex: I had a professor that always seemed grouchy. (This was an online class so we emailed to connect.) At the end of the term I got a big email telling how much she loved my writing and book reviews and she loved having me in the class! I was shocked. I did not get that impression from her emails at all.

Moral - I use exclamation points so people know I'm happy!!!!

*** In my defense... I work hard not to use them in my WIP. If I get carried away, my CP's are sure to catch them and make me fix them. Thanks CP's!!!

Don't worry - they're aren't going anywhere when it comes to your blog comments! I can't help myself. I have to get them out of my system, and you need to know how awesome I think you are!

On a side note... I'm an "awesome" whore too! (Hmmm - that doesn't sound right.) As in, I say "awesome" way too much! Sorry - it's stickin' too!

Do you have this issue too? What kind of things do you over-do?

HAHAHA!!! Oh my gosh. This was totally funny :) LOVED it.

I love the exclamation marks Leigh. :)

I, am a smiley face whore. They're everywhere. :) I'm sure you've probably noticed them in my critiques haha. But when I write something and I smile..:)..I put it down! :)

Hoooooly crap, you're hilarious... I'm going to try and not use any exclamation points in this post... Gah. Can't do it! Funny, there are exclamation point rules--when they're appropriate and not---what a fun post! ;)

I'm a parenthesis (did I spell that right?) whore.

Samantha said...

"I'm an awesome whore!"

Uh huh. I'm sure that's EXACTLY what you meant ;)

But I do have to agree with you. I am also an awesome whore in the way that you meant!

Oh my gosh girl! You and I together... I think we would scare everyone around us off! I think the exclamation points, smiley faces, and the lol's are the ones that I use the most, lol. And I do it without even noticing! You may think I'm doing it on purpose right now, but I'm really not, lol. I just don't know how else to talk! Or write... whatevs, lol.

Oh man, I can't tell you how many times I've hit someone in the boob cuz I've been talking with my hands, lol.

You are my soul sista, girl! Don't ever change! :)

I think I'm a semi-colon whore; I can't seem to avoid them.

Exclamations are useful for short, punchy statements and I agree that they can add a happy mood to any piece of writing. Cool!

Sarah Pearson said...

For everyday writing I love them all, brackets, ellipses, exclamation points, smilies ... for 'the' writing, I have to leave them all, (or most), of them out. Sigh ...

Kyra Lennon said...

LOL, an awesome whore! *rotfl*

I am an exclamation point whore also, especially when it comes to blogs and tweets. I try to hold back a little, but for the most part, I use them for the same reason as you - happiness!

You're an exclamation point, awesome whore! Lol Love it. I tend to "overuse" the exclamation point, too. You're not the only one. I also tend to "love" everything, but that's because I'm a positive, upbeat person.

OMG!!!

My eyes pooped, er popped out when I saw your first line and I was so like... For SHURE!!!! That is Soooo Leigh!!

Then I got to the awesome thingy part and I about lost it!!!

Hilarious sentence and I can sooo see you move via the amount of !!!'s

You are an awesome RockStar :)

S.P. Bowers said...

Nope, I'm completely calm and rational at all times. Never get carried away, or overly dramatic. Not me.....You believe me right???

Susanna Leonard Hill said...

Ditto everything you said in this post! We are clearly twins separated at birth :)

Cristina said...

AWESOME!!!!! I love that you just wrote up a while post to explain your overuse of !!!!!! LOL

but here's what got me: "Afterward, my mom asked me (yes, we're in the same WARD,)... WARD? I was totally like.... OMG both Leigh and her mom are crazy? and they live in the same psych ward? OMG I thought I knew this Leigh person.. LOL

I'm assuming it's a church related term, right?

I overuse ellipses... all the time... and I can't stop.. it's like an addiction... but seriously, after this post... I'm just going to embrace it.... <3

Alex J. Cavanaugh said...

I'm guilty as charged! See? Yeah, I tend to overuse them in my writing as well. Everything just seems to come out as if I'm giving a greeting of "Hey!"

*Coffee spew!* Holy funny, Batman! And you are not alone - I’m a Comma Junkie. We need a punctuation support group. With good snacks.

Rachel Schieffelbein said...

I've totally felt this way! I use a lot blogging, (and the word 'awesome' too, actually.) And I've thought, 'I hope people don't think this is how I write in my WIP.' Nice to know I'm not the only one! :)
ps. My daughter calls them 'excitement marks.' :)

Tobi Summers said...

I was just going to say I was a "cool" whore, but then I started reading other people's comments, and now I realize I'm also a smiley face whore, a parenthesis whore and a comma whore. And occasionally an exclamation point whore. And a "dude" whore. Um... yeah.

L.G.Smith said...

Hahahaha!!!

I do it too. And sometimes I'll go back and look at a comment I wrote on my blog or someone else's that's full of exclamation points and wonder what the heck I was on that day. In the moment though, I'm usually very animated when I add them!! Like right now, I'm really excited to share my love of the exclamation point!!

Angela Brown said...

You're an exclamation whore. As writers, we're all word whores, except those minimalist people. Who do they think they are anyway? lol!!

Actually, don't tell anyone, but I'm an LOL whole. Everywhere I comment, unless I can't find a way to laugh the moment off, I'm LOLing all over everybody. Is that so wrong????

Tell me.

Is it?

No? YAY!! LOL!!!

elizabeth seckman said...

As long as you get paid in the end...it's all good!

Jennifer Lee Young said...

Same as you Leigh!! Love to use them :)

Cortney Pearson said...

Lol, I think we are exactly the same, Leigh!! I love using exclamation points. They turn a boring sentence into an exciting sentence.

Exciting sentence.
Exciting sentence!!

Okay, I'm a total dork, but I also waaaay overdo AWESOME too!!! :D I also do the smileys too much probably. But I'm bubbly like you, so it's just a reflection of how I talk I guess. (And I can't believe that story, about the fake run-over!!)

Emily R. King said...

I am appreciative of bloggers who stick to who they are and write how they talk. It helps me get a sense of their voice. If people don't like it, who cares? This is who you are. : )

J. A. Bennett said...

I have this problem, and it's bad. I try not to, but I really, really like them!!!

Anyway, don't feel bad the coolest people use them :)

Melanie Fowler said...

I read the book "Eats(,) Shoots, and Leaves." a book about grammar and I became afraid to use more than one exclamation mark at a time.

Kate Coursey said...

Haha. I, too, am an explanation point whore. This is just too funny.

Angela Cothran said...

You are killing me with all your awesomeness this morning!!!!! We need more fun dramatic people in the world :)

Cindy Keen Reynders said...

I love my exclamation points, too. Especially with e-mail,social networking, etc. It seems to make a better point that when you are saying something, you are doing so with enthusiasm. For example, if you say Thanks to someone, depending on their mood or the situation, it could feel snarky. If you say, Thanks! I really appreciate that! I hope they would get your meaning. Yes, I avoid them in my books, unless absolutely necessary, though. Good topic!

Krista McLaughlin said...

I love exclamation points too! :) But I also like making a smiley face. Probably because I usually am very very smiley! :)

David P. King said...

Hilarious, Leigh. Can I admit using those little exclamation marks, too? Once in my writing, someone pointed out "there's a lot of ! going on," but then I thought, well, they are running through a forest on horseback, during an action scene. wouldn't they be shouting? But, yeah. I have to watch out for those marks, but they're just too darn fun! :)

Stacy S. Jensen said...

A critique leader suggested using one ! Per 100k words. I use them on my blog.

Ruth Josse said...

You are Awesome!!!! I like !'s too. And :)'s. I love using the word awesome and amazing and so. Everything is SO this or SO that!

Hope Roberson said...

HILARIOUS!!!!! I have a snarky comment for the awesome whore thing, but I'll keep it inside and giggle to myself :) I am a smiley face whore :) I have to go back over every comment, blog post, and text message to delete at least half of them :) But it's because I'm smiling while I write or giggling at what I am telling someone :) We've all got a little whore inside us ;)

Jolene Perry said...

I love to write things in CAPS, and I also love these . . . and these ;-D

I ALWAYS have to edit a few of them out of my posts ;-D

Patricia T. said...

Ha! That's a new one for me -- and Explanation Point Whore! You gave me my chuckle for the day. Needed one!

Also did what you did -- accidentally released a post last Sunday on a really good book I planned to release on Monday. Never release on Sunday as readership is low, so didn't get many readers on Monday because it looked like an old post. Oh well -- I'm sure I'll do it again.

Great post today!

Small Town Shelly Brown said...

This post was AWESOME!!!!!

I overuse !!!, CAPS, ..., :), ;), and fabulous with abandon.

This is personality writing. It's in short bursts (not pages of exclamation points and CAPS). It helps me to convey that I am excited and silly and don't take me too seriously.

Carrie Butler said...

I do that, too! We can't help that we're animated. ;)

Coleen Patrick said...

I'm guilty too! That and smiley faces :)
Can't help it!

Ha ha ha! I love that Cristina thought you and your mom were in a mental ward! Ha ha ha! I love me some ha's and !! and :) I use them a lot!:) ha ha ha!!

First - that story about the woman pretending to run over someone's kid is hideous! What a terrible thing to pretend to do. (I'm trying hard to keep out the exclamation). Second - I related to everything you said in your post. I have been addicted to exclamations, and emoticons, for quite a while. Plain old periods just don't have enough color for me. Thanks for the exclamation point support.

Kelley Vitollo said...

ROFL. Awesome post. I use them a lot too! I also notice I LOL a TON

Suzanne Collins uses buckets of exclamation points. I think that if she's making millions doing so...it's an endorsement to the power of the exclamation point. I think I counted ten on one page of the Hunger Games alone.

Talli Roland said...

Oh, do I! I do! :)

A CP once told me that every time I use an exclamation mark, God punches a kitten in the face. The sad thing is that it hasn't deterred me.

Peggy Eddleman said...

Me, too. Exclamation points and awesomes abound in my comments! In comments I completely ignore everything I know not to do in book writing. Because, really, we don't have pages to paint a scene, here, we have to let people know we loved it! With brevity!!

Juliana said...

Omg, I totally get this! lol
Your REASON #1? Yeah, that's me too ... I'm always super excited and put emphasizes on everything when talking lol
Great post ;)

Jack said...

Leigh, I'm a recovering exclamation mark addict! And even though I may have fewer exclamation marks in this comment, it does not mean I was not excited for your post!!!!!!!!!!

There. I was able to comment without my customary 21 exclamation marks. I only hit 11 this time! Er, twelve :)

Ashley Nixon said...

LOL. Sometimes I'll be writing and I'll add an exclamation point and it's only because I'm frustrated with what's happening in the text. Great post!!
