Words I Hate!

I officially have "words that I hate!"

Yes, these are the words that weasel their way into my MS, because... well, that's the way I talk! Yes, I completely overuse them when I talk, but... I shouldn't use them so much when I write. These are the buggers that are invading my current WIP:
  • just
  • have
  • was
  • that
CURSE THOSE WORDS! And after searching the internet I found other fabulous words that we should avoid as much as possible. I made a list. (I am so grateful for awesome CP's who help me catch these little buggers!

What words invade your WIP, that you constantly have to delete?

Also... Lara Schiffbauer awarded me with this awesome, SKUNK AWARD! The award is named 'The Thumbs up from Skunk Award' since "we all feel like stinky, stinky skunks some days" and there are people who make us feel (and smell) a whole lot better. Isn't that cool? I think so! And I'm excited to pass it on.

For this award, you have to name one thing about yourself that you LOVE, and then pass it on to as many people as you want. Easy, right?

One thing I love about myself is... that I am an optimist. That's not saying I don't have bad days, but I'm usually pretty optimistic and try to steer clear of pessimism.

I will pass this award on to the following people...
Cassie Mae - for being incredibly awesome, and hilarious and for being an uplifting and fun blogging buddy.
Shallee McArthur - for being back in the blogosphere again & for having an amazing blog where I learn SO MUCH!
Jade Hart - for having a totally cool name, a totally cool bar & for surprising me when I found that I was on her blog roll! Thanks Jade!
Jenny Sulpizio - for helping me to find the humor in parenting situations that totally stress me out!

Thanks everyone! AND... if you haven't entered to WIN, "Punxsutawney Phyllis" by Susanna Leonard Hill, you better get entered. It's an autographed copy and I am picking the winner on Thursday - GROUNDHOGS DAY!

I'm Leigh, and due to sick children... I'm off to sanitize my house.

Just is my nemesis. I just wish it would go away.

Congrats on the award and being an optimist is one of the things I love about you too.

Congratulations on your award! On the words that you hate, many of them can be corrected by just choosing a more powerful verb.

Cassie Mae said...

I used to just have that 'was' problem, but now I'm catching all those other words too.

Was that a stretch? Cuz I thought they all sounded pretty good together, lol.

And thanks for the stinky award!!! :)

Was kills me. I hate it! I actually have a list of about 50 words I do a word by word search for--yuck. I don't love that part of revisions.

I despise "well" and "very". Can't seem to get those out of my head.

Thanks for the list and the link! This is my editing homework for the day :)

Thanks for the list.

Sorry about the sick kids, hope they feel better.

I didn't realize how many times I used the word 'that' until Kelley started pointing it out to me. Thankfully she was kind enough to do so. And even though I am well aware of it now it still manages to weasel it's way in over and over again.

Samantha said...

Oh these words...ugh.

I hope the kids feel better and that you don't get sick too!!

I'm bookmarking this post.. that's a great list of pesty words!!!!!

JUST is the worst. :P "Just" sayin." ;)

Kelley said...

Oh. My. Gosh. You have to go check out my post. I passed on the 'skunk' award too and the thing I love about myself...well...haha. It's the same as yours :)

I have a little issue with those words too...and more!

Carrie Butler said...

Don't you just hate that? I write how I talk, too. I swear, I can't even see "just" anymore. Thank God for critique partners! :)

Carrie Butler said...

...I hit the button too early. I forgot to say congratulations on your award! :)

'that' invades my writing quite a lot. And I'm a total comma whore. Not a word, but it's still annoying.

I've heard a lot of stink about that award, a good kind of stink. Congrats!

Got, get, and gotten. Man. Those words rub me in the worst way. :)

Now that I don't have my MS in front of me, I can't remember mine, but there are a few that I'm CONSTANTLY deleting. Saving this for the future.

Jade Hart said...

Thanks so much for the award Leigh - so much love! :) I'm spoilt. Glad you like my name :) I inherited it through my hubby :) Like it a lot better than my maiden one!!

ladonna watkins said...

And then is mine. I agree with the list.

I'm a terrible abuser of the words "just" and "was." I usually let them go on the first draft and then have to do a search and destroy to catch them all. :)

I also have to watch out for the "I thought, I saw, I heard" type language when I'm writing in first person. Best to simply describe those things as they happen, because the reader assumes it is the narrator hearing, seeing, and thinking about them.

Peggy Eddleman said...

Ha! I was just writing a blog post, and I talked about the words I overuse. Definitely "that" and "just." I have to delete like crazy when I do revisions! (And yes, I am totally fine putting them in there for the first draft.)

Congrats on the award! I haven't seen that one before. And congrats to those you passed it on to!

Enough of sick children...it's time to get better, EVERYONE!!!

I don't like any of those words too...I think I use them too much as well.

Leigh, you are cool, end of story.

Tara Tyler said...

add try, start and begin
oh yeah, and thought
bad, bad words! git off my page!

way to stink it up! ha ha

Melissa Pearl said...

I'm a sucker for the word "just". It's SO annoying!!!
Thanks for that awesome list. Will do my best to avoid them :)

Good luck with your sick kids. I hope they get better super soon!

Emily R. King said...

I hate "that" too. Mostly because it sneaks into sentences when I'm not looking, I cut it out, and then POOF! there it is again. Ha!

Kristin Baker Przybyla said...

Oh gurrl, you get the honor of my favorite post of the week! ;) 'That' and 'was' are the words I hate the most. I'm reading a series I really enjoy, but those are the author's favorite words. Seriously, he uses them at every possible opportunity. His descriptions of a room or scene are almost painful to read. "A chair was in the corner of the room, which was dark. A large window was on the other side of the bed, which was covered with a quilt..." You get the point. I want to scream every time he gets into a descriptive scene, and although I love the story, I want to scream again when I realize it's a bestselling series!

Ruth Josse said...

Look. That's mine. Everyone is looking and looking some more. What in the heck are they all looking at!

Cortney Pearson said...

Congrats on the award! I think my nemesis words are just, so, and even. I use even waaay too much!

LisaAnn said...

Congrats to all the winners, and what a great list of words to avoid. My arch nemesis is "like." I don't SAY it that much, but it's apparently my very favorite in every story. (I'd love to say that's because I construct so many beautiful similes, but it's probably because I talk like a valley girl.)

Lara Schiffbauer said...

Yay! Another optimist!!

I use "just" way too much. I think I gave up and plan to "just" do a word search and delete when I get to that point!

Alleged Author said...

Congrats on the award!

Ugh...the word "got" gets me quite a bit.

This is a great post! I'm saving the picture of words to avoid in my "books" folder (with pictures that get the creative juices flowing for setting and whatnot.) Just and That are two words I need to avoid more!

Jenny Sulpizio said...

Yay for awards and I am so glad I could provide you with some comic relief. Thanks, Leigh!!!

Trisha said...

It's fun to see these awards make the rounds. :)

Sorry about your sick children!! Hope they feel better soon.

I have words I hate too... One of them is 'blog'. hahahaha. I don't hate blogs, but I hate that word.

Mark Koopmans said...

"Just leave "just" alone, he said anxiously, as he just typed like that was as fast as only all his fingers could eagerly type."

Hey Leigh, that was a horrendous sentence above, but I *loved* your post... it was spot on :)

You had me at "Just" :)

you could come up with a blog hop based upon how many of those words could you use in ONE sentence :)

Just me only saying...

Susanna Leonard Hill said...

Great list of words to avoid. Thanks! And I hope the kids fell better soon and you get some sleep and don't catch whatever they had! :)

Sarah Pearson said...

'Very' seems to crop up too much in my writing :-)

Hope the kids are on the mend!

clarbojahn said...

Congrats on the award, Leigh. And thanks for the list. I'm terrible with to be and every passive verb that passes by. lol.

Kelly Hashway said...

I write "just" a lot when I'm drafting. I don't even realize I'm going it. I do go back and delete them in revisions.
